Inclement and Extreme Weather Policy

Extreme weather can present as a hazard to health and wellbeing for infants, children, and adults. Extreme weather is considered to be weather conditions too cold, wet, hot, windy or generally unsafe. As such, Wild Child programming will not run if:

  • The temperature is higher than 30°C.

  • The air quality is rated a 7 or higher. If the air quality is rated at 4 - 6, conditions will be closely monitored.

  • The temperature is lower than 0 degrees Celsius (including wind chill).

Weather Conditions for Outdoor Activities: Outdoor activities will take place in various outdoor locations across the Victoria Capital Regional District (CRD), regardless of weather conditions, with one exception. For the safety of the children, our outdoor activities will only occur when the outside temperature, combined with the wind chill, is warmer than 0°C and lower than 30°C according to the Weather Network. We will also be checking air quality levels in the summer when wildfires are common in the region, impacting air quality and respiratory health. To ensure the safety of all participants, this information will be checked before the program takes place.

Dressing for Inclement Weather: Parents and guardians are responsible for dressing their children in weather-appropriate clothing, taking into account the prevailing weather conditions. Please ensure that your child is appropriately layered, with warm clothing, waterproof outerwear, gloves, hats, and suitable footwear for the conditions. Adequate protection against cold, wet, or windy weather is essential to prevent discomfort and potential health risks.

Safety First: While we are enthusiastic about providing outdoor experiences in all seasons, we want to emphasize that the safety of the children attending our program is our top priority. Our inclement weather policy is based on the best available information to prevent frostbite, respiratory issues, and heat stroke and ensure the children's overall well-being. We appreciate your understanding.

Communication: In the event that outdoor activities are canceled due to inclement weather, we will promptly communicate the cancellation to all participants and families. Notifications will be sent via email or text message, ensuring that everyone is informed well in advance.

We thank you for entrusting us with the opportunity to provide your child with meaningful outdoor experiences through our Wild Child Playgroup program. By working together and prioritizing safety, we can continue to nurture a deep connection between children and the natural world.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns regarding our inclement weather policy. Your feedback and suggestions are always welcome as we strive to provide the best possible experiences for your child.
